When the author, John C. McComb, became frustrated trying to find God during 20 years as a lay leader in mainline churches, he set out to find people who were having a direct experience of God. As a writer, John determined that he wanted write a book telling their stories so that he could find his own way and share it with others who could benefit in their own personal path toward God.

He went to his friend, Clyde Vandeburg, who in partnership with Art Linkletter, was a book producer and agent. Clyde thought he could sell the book. He helped John line up celebrities like Sugar Ray Robinson and Adela Rogers St. Johns to interview. 

Finding God was written at the time the Jesus Movement and the New Age movement were underway and the book has stories from both. And there were experiences of ministers and a famous Rabbi. What was fascinating was that all of their stories contained the same elements. Fundamental Christians and New Age pilgrims were finding the same answers, but using entirely different words or semantics to describe what had happened.

When the book was completed, Vandeburg called several times to report that editors for leading New York publishers had bought the book. Then he had to renege, because marketing executives for the publishers vetoed the sale in each case. They said neither New Age or Christian bookstores would buy a book that said they were experiencing the same God. And each of those markets would demand that the stories be told with their "sacred" semantics. Book experts told John to rewrite the book for different spiritual markets, but he felt that God didn't want that to happen. During the writing, he had had his own experience of God, and he found that the primary message was that there was only one God; and it was time to realize that real spiritual experiences come through many churches and faiths. The fact that some used ordinary words and common reference points while others used special words didn't make them wrong.

The book's chapters tell how Boxing Multiple-Champion Sugar Ray Robinson's handlers stayed 100 yards behind when he did roadwork training, because that was his time to converse with God. And it tells how ministers talked him out of cancelling a bout when a spiritual premonition warned that he would kill his opponent. They convinced him; and he went ahead The other fighter died in the ring!

Adela Rogers St. Johns had her experience of God in an emergency ambulance to the hospital when, in desperation, she surrendered her life. Rev. Tom Mails went into the ministry after a vision of Saint Peter appeared to him when all of the lights in his home switched on in the middle of the night.  Another story tells of a nine-year heroin addict who had an instant healing when Jesus Movement followers laid hands on him.
